Holiday Treats or Sweets
Because I am a lazy blogger and have NOTHING to show you, I thought we could discuss favorite Holiday recipes.
I have a short list of things I start craving around this time of the year. Chex Party Mix, Lefse, and Kringle were part of my formative years. My husband starts talking about rum balls and fudge. And one year my husband had to work in Germany between Christmas and New Years and we experienced the best Stollen. I wish I knew how to make that!
So... What's your favorite, can't-celebrate-the-holidays-without-it, recipe? This Kringle recipe comes from a church cookbook that I grew up with and was originally published in 1968. There are at least 9 recipes for Kringle in it. Here's one of them.
Kringle
1 cup sugar
butter the size of an egg (2 tbsp?)
2 egg yolks, beaten
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup sour cream
1 tsp. baking soda
3 cups flour
2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
a dash of nutmeg
Cream butter and sugar. Add egg yolks and vanilla. Put the soda in the sour milk and sour cream. Add to the egg mixture. Add the sifted dry ingredients. Chill well. Roll in long rolls and form into bows or figure 8 shapes. Bake in a hot oven 450 degrees F. till light brown or paler if you like.

Oh, I love stollen...my grandmother makes the best! One of the problems with making it here is getting the ingredients. I made it with her last year, and am still a bit intimidated to make it on my own. She doesn't really use a recipe, just starts with 5 lbs of flour and goes from there...
My grandmother made these cookies and called them "star cookies." They're a butter yeast dough that you roll like you're making puff pastries, layering with vanilla sugar. Then you twist them and bake them--oh, nummy. I experimented with them this year, since my mixer died. I tried to knead them in my bread machine, and it wasn't half bad. Hmm. Maybe I should post on phlog my adventures in Christmas baking this year.
The other recipe, of course, is Ribbon Cake. Did I ever make any for you? I think I have that recipe on the gourmet page (www.kurle.com/bonjee/gourmet), but again, I'm not sure.
Bon - I don't remember the Ribbon Cake. But the Star Cookies sound wonderful - and much more decadent than these Kringle. Yes, please post your baking adventures!
Rebecca - Oh, I wish I had your grandmother nearby to teach me how to make stollen!
