Kids & Knitting

Has anyone taught a group of kids, ages 5-10, how to knit?

A friend of mine wants me to teach a class for mom's & kids at the elementary school where her son attends. I think it would be cool, but.... a really big B-U-T, I have never taught any kids how to do anything! Am I insane?

I'm thinking... Sugar and Cream wash cloths - for both the moms and the kids. They can learn together. And the supplies are fairly inexpensive.

Anyone have some wise words to pass on to me? Bamboo or plastic knitting needles? Goofy little rhymes like this one I found on the Internet to help them remember how to form a knit stitch?

"In through the front door,
Run around the back,
Hop through the window,
Off jumps Jack."

I spent years teaching young kids and it can be a lot of fun. With the moms there too there should be no discipline problems. I'd say you'll have a great time. Go for it!

Dishcloths sound like a good idea. I made the mistake of teaching kids, teens and adults how to make a scarf (figuring it was something they could all use). The adult made it through, but the kids and teens kind of got bored halfway through. They need completion and success early on to encourage them onto larger projects.

Here are two more learning poems for ya:

Under the fence
Catch the sheep
Back we come
Off we leap

Into the bunny hole
Run around the tree
Out of the bunny hole
Away runs he

Have fun! Your enthusiasm will be contagious!

Check out my friend's blog:

She might have some pointers...

Oops - that should end "...-saturdays-knit-wit.htm"

If you copy to the next line, then it still works.

I just taught my dd, who is 7, to knit a bit ago.
The thing that helped her was starting with 2 different colored needles - so I could say "now move the red one this way and the blue one that way" and didn't have to say right, left, etc ...
Anyway she picked it up pretty quickly, which I wasn't expecting ...
Oh yeah, I casted on for her and just taught her to straight knit.

I recently taught a mom and her 9 or 10 yr old to knit. It really isn't too difficult. I did find it easier however to use regular yarn and a bigger needle. Size 9 or 10 maybe.

A big THANK YOU to everyone who left such good suggestions. I think we have just about all of the details worked out. In January, I let you know how it went.

I am a kntting expert. I have knitted many things before, but never thought to use foolish rhymes. I would be better off without them. I like to knit hats, scarves, sweaters, mittens/gloves, socks, stockings, you name it, I knit. I work at a famous knitting store but you probably haven't heard of it. But anyways, I just wanted to suggest simply teaching the students how to knit. Why bother with rhymes when you can have fun without giving speeches?
